Peru to support export-oriented SMEs as global crisis looms

Lima (ANDINA). Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) will suggest measures to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) to support the exports of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the face of a global financial crisis.

“We must see how to help especially the small and medium businesses as they generate a huge number of employment opportunities,” the head of Mincetur Jose Silva said Tuesday.
He pointed out that his office will address this issue with MEF as well as with Peru’s Central Reserve Bank (BCR), with which he will discuss measures to cope with the effect of reducing exchange rate.
“BCR is an independent body and is able to make some efforts in this regard,” the minister noted.
On Monday, the sol closed stronger at PEN2.741 per dollar, compared with PEN2.744 per dollar in the previous session. So far this year, the sol has appreciated 2.35% against the U.S. dollar.
Silva is scheduled to meet today with representatives of the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) to discuss topics related to the development of the Peruvian tourism sector.
