Peru aims to boost bilateral trade with US
Lima (ANDINA). The Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL) and its Foreign Trade Center (CCEX) organized on Tuesday a workshop named “How to take advantage of the United States-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement” aiming to show the benefits and opportunities of businesses between both nations.
During the opening ceremony the first Vice President of the CCL Julian Lockett noted that this workshop will step up the efforts of public and private organizations to stimulate the current bilateral trade with the United States, considered Peru’s main trading partner.
“In spite of the remarkable growth of trade since the Free Trade Agreement came into force (2009), business opportunities with the US have not been exploited to their full potential yet . In 2010, Peru’s trade with this market reached US$11 billion, however, these figures should be much higher.”
Lockett stressed it was necessary to increase Peruvian non-traditional exports to the US market, which has 313 million consumers. Moreover, despite the financial crisis, this country will continue demanding value-added products.
He also highlighted that Peru should make the most of the benefits offered in the Free Trade Agreements already signed with different countries worldwide.
The United States – Peru Trade Promotion Agreement is a two-way pact signed to eliminate obstacles to trade and to consolidate access to goods and services as well as to foster private investment between both countries.
